Yesterday was my daughter's 3rd birthday and she absolutely loved the cake I've been nervous about. I am not the most artistically creative person, but I've learned SO much about cake decoration and fondant that I only want to get better! I also appreciate the cake industry more than ever!
So what did I do? In this post, you can see what recipe I used for the marshmallow fondant and how I did it.
Wednesday I used Ina Garten's Butter Icing recipe, then colored it pink with Wilton gel dyes sent to me from a friend.
For the cakes, I cut the tops even then frosted cut side, then added the other cake cut side down; then I spread a thin layer of icing and put in a fridge for about 20 minutes.
I cut, no ripped, pieces of parchment to put under the cake so the cake stand would not get messy.
While that was in the fridge, I asked my daughter what color she wanted her fondant to be. She wanted pink, but then was serious about golden yellow! So I kneaded the gel dye into the fondant which took about 7 minutes. Once kneaded, I put the fondant back into in a plastic bag. I added a final layer of icing to the cake, and made sure it was smooth as possible.
I put it to the side, sprinkled some cornstarch on my counter and with a rolling pin I then rolled the fondant out until it was about 16 by 16. It rolled out nicely! With the help of my husband, I quickly put the fondant on the cake and gently smoothed it on. Once it was on nicely, I cut the ends.
The thing I am most sad about is that I didn't really decorate it. I am not so artistic, but my children thought it was pretty and
Not so creative I know :)
She thoroughly loved the cake and even snook some bites. By the crooked "T" you can see a big gash she made. Hehe. She helped me with the fondant, so I guess she wanted to taste test it.
Some photos from the party, too.

Cake sliced and dished. My friend's daughter were excited about waiting the fondant. It was tasty.
I did it!! Oh one of the children's friends gave e a candy accessory ;) I didn't go crazy....close, though!
Happy birthday! Haha! My daughter was the same way with the covering of the ears when she was that age! SO CUTE! I have always wanted to make fondant. Looks like you did a fantastic job! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a very happy little birthday girl!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your beautiful girl. Love the pics. The cake looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!
Happy 3rd Birthday Amara. You did a great job with the cake Sommer, you should be very proud!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Princess Amara!!! The cake looks yummy. I may not even attempt this one--don't have the skills like Queen Mommy :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your beautiful daughter! I think that cake looks great! You made it yourself and took the time to put love into it, and truly, that's what matters!
ReplyDeleteAww thank you everyone for the well wishes and kind words! I am always a bit hard on myself...she loved it (they ate the ;ast of it last night!) and that's all that matters! As I said, I'll do this again in a heartbeat!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting the link to the fondant recipe--the Wilton website is the last place I would have looked. Their pre-packaged fondant is probably the nastiest tasting stuff I've ever put in my mouth so I refuse to use it. My cakes have to taste as good as they look. Period. Your daughter's cake looks gorgeous and it must have tasted good. I'll have to try that fondant recipe myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gayle! After I decided to make my own fondant, I did find some at my PX....after reading the ingredients list, I am glad I made my own. There was only one brand available, I am sure there are much better tasting ones...I hope!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to your beautiful daughter. Your cake looks GREAT! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my post about my nephew Khaleeq. Thanks for your sweet comment. I also made Khaleeq a cake on his birthday. To honor him. It was MY first time getting a bit artsy with it. I didn't use fondant but I did multiple colors. I do plan to post pictures of it along with a Thank you for the wonderful outpouring of love, support and prayers from y'all! :) Thank you again.
